Mets Bats Stay Hot In 11-6 Victory, Ensuring Series Sweep

The San Diego Padres’ comeback effort fell short as the New York Mets (33-37) added insurance runs, securing an 11-6 victory and completing a weekend series sweep. This win extended New York’s winning streak to five games and brought them within four games of .500 along with a 5-1 homestand. Dylan Cease took the mound for San Diego, while Tylor Megill looked to continue his strong performance for the Mets.

Cease would leave the game after 3 2/3 innings, giving seven hits on seven runs, three walks, and five strikeouts. Entering the game, Cease’s expected analytics checked out as one of the better in the major leagues. For the Mets, Megill was got the job done, pitching five innings, only giving up five hits, two runs, two walks, while striking out five.

The Mets came out of the gate offensively hard against Cease. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso led the charge with a solo home run and a three-run homer in the first to make it a 4-1 game. Harrison Bader and J.D. Martinez also contributed key hits, with Bader’s RBI double and Martinez’s two-bagger driving in additional runs in the bottom of the fourth to put New York up 7-1.

Behind Megill, Adrian Houser held the fort for the Mets, pitching two strong innings. Unfortunately, Jake Diekman and Drew Smith allowed San Diego to creep back into the game. In the top of the eighth inning, the San Diego Padres scored four runs against the two aforementioned Met relievers. Jurickson Profar, Jackson Merrill, David Peralta, and Ha-Seong Kim each contributed to the rally, bringing the score to 7-6. Harrison Bader made a leaping catch in center field to prevent a second run from scoring and possibly tying the game for the Padres.

After San Diego’s bullpen did a terrific job keeping the Padres in the game for a the majority of the contest, Luis Torrens knocked a fastball from Jeremiah Estrada to put the Mets back up by two in the bottom of the eighth. After Torrens’ home run, the Mets continued to swing the bat well and got those four runs right back. Specifically, bases-loaded hits by Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso extended the lead back out to 11-6.

Sean Reid-Foley finished off the Padres and pitch a scoreless ninth to lock down the series sweep.

Statistics of the Game: J.D. Martinez Stays Hot

J.D. Martinez continues his hot hitting, going 2-for-3 with two walks and a run batted in. Although he struck out in the bottom of the eighth, he held the second-longest on-base appearance in Mets history by getting on base safely in 10 consecutive plate appearances.

Player of the Game: Pete Alonso

Pete Alonso swung the lumber well, as he drove in five runs to lead the charge against San Diego. A three-run home run in the first inning and a two-run, bases-loaded single in the bottom eighth helped propel New York to the series-sweep victory.

On Deck

The Mets head to the Lone Star State to take on the Texas Rangers. David Peterson (2-0, 4.32 ERA) will look to rebound on the mound for New York while Jon Gray (2-2, 2.17 ERA) starts for the Rangers. First pitch is at 8:05 pm ET on Monday and will be broadcast on SNY and WCBS 880 AM.
