Albany Baseball Club ties with Saugerties

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Albany Baseball Club tied with the Saugerties Stallions in a game where both offenses scored a combined 24 runs.

Albany Baseball Club tallied 11 hits but committed 7 errors and the Stallions recorded 17 hits and one error. This marked the third meeting between these teams this season, with Saugerties winning the last two match-ups.

This was the 13th game for the Albany Baseball Club after the team was created because the Albany Dutchmen announced they would not be participating in the 2024 season back in April. The news left numerous college baseball players without a team to play for during the summer.

Brian Spagnola, the president of the Amsterdam Mohawks, took action. He initiated an effort to put a team together for those players and thus the Albany Baseball Club was born. Some of those players include local talent like Chatham graduate Matt Thorsen.

Thorsen believes despite the moment of uncertainty, this new opportunity has revitalized the players with new motivation.

"It's an opportunity for all of us to, you know, get out there and kind of redeem ourselves," Thorsen said. "You know, when we heard that the Dutchmen were shutting down, it was kind of like, what are we going to do? But yeah, we figured it out."

Thorsen finished 1 for 5 batting scoring one run in the contest.

The Albany Baseball Club's next game is on Monday, June 17, against the Utica Blue Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
