Minor League Recap for Friday, June 14th, 2024

Columbus Clippers (29-37) - AAA

IOW 3 - COL 6

The Columbus Clippers bested the Iowa Cubs (CHC) Friday night with starting RHP Xzavion Curry getting the W for Columbus, his first on the season in AAA. Curry had a quality start against the ICubs, pitching 6.0 IP, giving up only 1 ER on 5 H and 1 BB. Curry ended the night with 4 strikeouts on 81 pitches. Columbus turned it over to LHP Erik Sabrowski for the 7th inning. He threw an inning of hitless, scoreless, walkless baseball, securing his 3rd hold of the season. RHP Andrew Walters came in to pitch the 8th inning but gave up 2 earned runs, 1 hit, and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts. RHP Tanner Burns would get his second save of the season, pitching the 9th inning. Burns only gave up one hit - 0 R, 0 BB to cap off his night and secure the victory for Columbus.

Clippers offense saw multi hit nights from Jose Tena (2), Juan Brito (2), Angel Martinez (2), and Jhonkensy Noel (3). Jose Tena started the night with a lead off home run in the bottom of the 1st. From there scoring momentum would carrying throughout the entire game. Noel had a 2 run single in the bottom of the 3rd, Martinez had a 1 run single in the bottom of the 4th, and a wild pitch in the Bottom of the 7th scored Estevan Florial putting the Clippers up 5-1. In the bottom of the 8th with bases loaded Estevan Florial drew a walk to score Johnathan Rodriguez, capping off scoring for the night at 6 runs for the Clippers.

Something that may be noteworthy or may be nothing at all - Myles Straw was brought in the bottom of the 7th to pinch run for George Valera.

Akron RubberDucks (35-26) - AA

AKR 2 - HFD 1

Box Score

The Hartford Yard Goats (COL) fell to the Akron RubberDucks at the hand of some dominant pitching. LHP Doug Nikhazy recorded a quality start Friday night. Nikhazy pitched 6.1 innings, giving up only 1 hit, 1 earned run, and 3 walks - striking out 5. RHP Bradley Hanner finished the 7th inning with only 1 hit, securing his 5th win on the season. RHP Lenny Torres Jr. pitched the 8th and 9th inning, striking out 4 with only 1 hit in his 6th save for the RubberDucks.

Petey Halpin was responsible for both runs for Akron, scoring in the top of the 4th on a Joe Lampe ground out and in the Top of the 8th off a C.J. Kayfus sac fly. Halpin was also the only RubberDuck to record 2 hits. C.J. Kayfus, Kahlil Watson, and Micael Ramirez made up the remainder of Akron’s 5 hits.

Lake County Captains (37-24) - High A

FW 2 - LC 3

Box Score

Keeping the affiliate ball rolling, the Lake County Captains bested the Fort Wayne TinCaps (SD) 3-2 in 10 innings.

RHP Carter Spivey went 5.0 innings with 4 H, 2 R, 5 BB, and only 1 K. RHP Zach Jacobs threw for 3.0 innings, with a very impressive 1 H, 1 BB, and 6 Ks. He handed the game over to RHP Zane Morehouse who recorded his first W on the season, pitching both the 9th and 10th inning. Morehouse blanked the TinCaps, with 0 H, 0 BB, and 4 K.

The hits were spread out for the Captains, but Jorge Burgos 2-for-4 with 1 R and 1 RBI.

In the bottom of the 9th, 1-out, runners on the corners, Jonah Advincula singled on a line drive to score Jake Fox, tying the game. In the bottom of the 10th, Maick Collado singled to bring in the ghost runner for a walk-off victory.

Lynchburg Hillcats (34-27) - Low A

AUG 1 - LYN 6

Box Score

The Hillcats completed the organization sweep, beating the Augusta GreenJackets (ATL) 6 to 1. RHP Yorman Gomez tacked on a quality start of his own. Pitching 6.0 innings of 1 run baseball, striking out 5 Augusta batters. RHP Reny Artiles captured his 2nd win of the season, pitching 2.0 innings of scoreless baseball. Artiles only gave up 1 hit with 1 strikeout. RHP Robert Wegielnik pitched a shutout in the 9th inning, locking in a solid win for Lynchburg.

The Hillcats scored 6 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks. In the bottom of the 4th, Manuel Mejias doubled to start the inning. Jose Pastrano reached on a fielding error that scored Mejias to tie the game at 1-to-1. In the bottom of the 6th, Lexer Saduy led off with a walk followed by a stolen base - his 4th on the season. Fran Alduey tripled to right field, scoring Saduy. Tommy Hawke walked and Christian Knapczyk had a sac fly scoring Alduey. Wulifredo Antunez hit a 2 run HR to cap the scoring for the 7th. In the bottom of the 8th, Saduy was HBP then stole 2nd again. Saduy would ultimately score the final run for Lynchburg on a wild pitch.
