Alonso Homers and Drives in Two in Mets’ Loss to the Giants

0 3

Though the Mets were not on the winning side of an offense-heavy game, their bats were alive, including the bat of Pete Alonso.

Alonso was 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored, contributing to the seven runs the Mets scored in their 8-7 loss to the Giants in game one of the series. He represented the Mets’ third home run of the game.

Alonso is currently batting .240/ .315/ .480, with a .795 OPS. His Friday night home run was his 12th of the season.

Over his last 15 games, Alonso has batted .313/.362/.609 with 10 RBIs and 9 runs scored. He’s had a bit of an up-and-down year, however over the last seven to fifteen games, Alonso appears to be heating up, and it appeared the Mets’ offense was following suit as a whole as well as they struck for one of their best offensive performances of the year.

The Mets’ offense, however, was not able to be supported by their bullpen. The team fell to the Giants on Friday night 8-7, marking their 21st loss in their last 30 games. In surprising fashion, that’s where Alonso has shined this season.

In losses this year, Alonso is slashing .276/.339/.543 with eight of his twelve homers. The Mets have wasted his offensive production so far this season, which isn’t surprising as the team is 21-29 this season. In wins, Alonso is slashing only .188/.283/.388 with four homers.

The high slashline in losses is no fault of Alonso. The Mets have averaged 5.5 runs over their last six games, where Alonso has slashed .321/.367/.607 with two homers. Despite the performance from their first baseman, and even scoring nine runs in one game, the Mets have gone 1-5 in those six games.

If the Mets are to turn the season around, they’ll need a better collective performance from the team. Earlier in the season, the pitching was carrying the team and the offense was struggling. Now, the roles have reversed, with Alonso and the offense leading the way, and the pitching collapsing.
