Francisco Alvarez Scheduled for BP This Weekend

0 3

Francisco Alvarez, who has been out since tearing a ligament in his left thumb while running the bases in Los Angeles on April 19, may take batting practice on the Mets’ next homestand, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. The Mets return home on Friday to play the San Francisco Giants.

“He’s got a splint there that is helping, but yesterday he caught,” Carlos Mendoza said. “He’s scheduled to catch off a velo machine today. And like I said, batting practice on the field this weekend, so progressing well.”

The Mets hope the 22-year-old, whose thumb required surgery, can get the practice swings in and return in mid-to-late June, Puma reported. In 16 games, Alvarez had one homer and eight RBIs and was hitting .236/.288/.364.

Alvarez hit 25 homers in his rookie 2023 season. He has been replaced by the duo of Tomás Nido and Omar Narváez.
