The Mariners Couldn’t Navigate Past Burnes

0 16

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Seattle Mariners 6-3 on a sunny Sunday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Tell me if this sounds familiar, Gunnar Henderson (2 for 4, HR, R, RBI, SB) homered for the 15th time in 2024; another homerun to lead off the Orioles half of the first inning.

Starter and eventual winning pitcher Corbin Burnes (4-2) set the pace and the Mariners never caught up with what he was dealing. Burnes struck out the side in the first inning and by the end of the fifth he had struck out 11 of the 15 batters he faced. When all was said and done, Burnes allowed just 1 run on 7 hits with a walk and the aforementioned 11 strikeouts over 6.0 innings. The quality start took 94 total pitches, 63 for strikes.

Seattle got to Jacob Webb, scoring 2 runs on 1 hit and a walk before Webb recorded an out. Cole Irvin allowed 1 hit over 2.0 innings and Craig Kimbrel earned his ninth save by striking out 2 in the ninth inning.

Offensively, Ryan O’Hearn (1 for 4, HR, R, RBI) opened the third inning with his sixth homerun of the season.

Colton Cowser went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI while making a top-10 diving catch in the eighth inning.

Cedric Mullins went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and a stolen base.

James McCann went 1 for 4 with a double and 1 RBI.

Jordan Westburg (1 for 4, R), Austin Hays (1 for 4) and Jorge Mateo (1 for 4, R, SB) each recorded a hit in the contest.
