Steve Cohen Clarifies Deleted Tweet

0 6

You never want to be the main character on X, it was once tweeted, and Mets owner Steve Cohen didn’t quite become that, but he did cause a stir Wednesday with a comment on the social media platform.

“All in the future, not much we can do until the trade deadline,” Cohen tweeted in response to a fan during the Mets’ 10-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. He deleted it later.

Andy Martino of SNY called Cohen Thursday to clear things up. Many people thought the tweet meant the Mets would be shipping away players at the trade deadline, even though it could be interpreted the opposite way.

Cohen told Martino he intended to send a direct message privately to the fan and he was shocked when the responses poured in. He said he was not suggesting the Mets would be trade deadline sellers at all.

“I believe in this team,” the owner told Martino. “I believe in the back of the baseball card. It’s way too early to speculate on anything. It’s May 16. I expect to make the playoffs. I know the fan base is frustrated, but it’s still early. We’re still very capable of making the playoffs. I fully expect to make the playoffs.”

New York is 19-23, 11 games behind the first-place Phillies, but just one game back of the last wild card spot.
