Charlotte Knights

Record 2-4 (last week), 15-23 (overall)

Knights Player of the Week

Jake Woodford 12 IP, 1 ER, 7 H, 4 BB, 11 K

Colson Montgomery 4-for-18, HR, 3B, 2B, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 5 K

Oscar Colás 4-for-18, HR, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 4 K
Carlos Pérez 5-for-15, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 0 K
Chuckie Robinson 1-for-10, RBI, 2 BB, 2 K
Dominic Fletcher 4-for-18, HR, 2 2B, 2 BB, 3 K

Chad Kuhl 4 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 4 K
Nick Nastrini 6 2⁄3 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K
Johan Domínguez 6 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K
Jonathan Cannon 4 1⁄3 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 3 K

It was not the finest week for the Knights, who fell to eight games worse than .500. However, pitcher Jake Woodford started two games and performed admirably in both. In total, Woodford only allowed one run on seven hits in 12 innings. Those kinds of weeks do not come along often for pitchers in the International League, but Woodford went above and beyond. Incredibly, though, Woodford got a no-decision in both of those starts, as the bullpen was not up to the task during either of those games.

Fellow starter Johan Domínguez deserves honorable mention for his brilliant start, when he pitched six shutout innings against Gwinnett. In addition, Mark Payton was an on-base machine, going 7-for-14 with a pair of walks.

Birmingham Barons

Record 1-5 (last week), 20-12 (overall)

Barons Player of the Week

Mason Adams 5 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K

Brooks Baldwin 5-for-22, 2B, RBI, 4 BB, 3 K
Tim Elko 6-for-25, HR, 2B, 1 BB, 8 K

Terrell Tatum 3-for-17, RBI, 5 BB, 4 K, 2 SB, 0 CS
Edgar Quero 4-for-21, HR, 5 RBI, 0 BB, 5 K
Duke Ellis 1-for-15, 1 BB, 3 K, 2 SB, 0 CS
Tyler Neslony 4-for-9, 2 2B, RBI, 0 BB, 0 K

Ky Bush 5 1⁄3 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 9 K
Drew Thorpe 6 1⁄3 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 4 BB, 5 K
Jairo Iriarte 5 1⁄3 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 8 BB, 4 K
Jake Eder 5 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 6 K

It was a rare off-week for the Barons, who only managed to collect one victory. The offense struggled immensely, as even the lone victory in Pensacola was a 2-0 pitchers’ duel. For the Player of the Week award, standout starters Drew Thorpe and Jairo Iriarte took a back seat to Mason Adams, who was terrific over five innings, striking out six while displaying great command. Although it can be easy to lose track of Adams due to Birmingham’s rotation’s excellence, he has taken a big step forward in 2024, posting a 2.97 ERA, a 3.52 FIP, and a 2.26 xFIP in 33 1⁄3 innings.

In the honorable mention category, Jake Eder’s start was not much less impressive than Adams’, and outfielder Tyler Neslony was terrific in a limited sample size this week.

Drew Thorpe (April 8-14)
Edgar Quero (April 15-21)
Ky Bush (April 22-28)
Bryan Ramos (April 29-May 5)

Manuel Veloz 5 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 K

Overall, this season has not gone the way DJ Gladney had hoped it would go — but that changed in a big way this week. Gladney was crushing the ball from start to finish, posting an .882 slugging percentage. Gladney appeared to be in the middle of an “all is lost” type of moment near the end of April, but he has flipped the script lately, and his overall production at the plate has already recovered being to right around league average despite his slow start to the season.

Jacob Gonzalez gave Gladney a run for his money and nearly won his second straight Player of the Week award, going 9-for-26 with three extra-base hits and three steals in as many attempts. Calvin Harris also gave the Dash a major spark at the plate, finishing 6-for-13 with a homer and four walks.

Luis Pineda 3-for-15, HR, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 0 BB, 7 K

Jake Peppers 5 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 3 BB, 2 K
Lucas Gordon 6 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 3 BB, 4 K

Nothing has changed, as the Cannon Ballers are still sitting on .500, just as they were last series. Regarding the Player of the Week, Ryan Galanie takes home the distinction. Given how well Galanie has performed, it seemed like a matter of time before he got his first weekly honor, and he delivered the best performance on the team this time around. Galanie collected 10 hits, six RBIs, and five walks, as he was extremely difficult for opposing pitchers to retire.
