Luis Castillo tries to steady the Mariners after a seven-run defeat last night

After suffering a bad defeat last night, the Mariners will try to rebound to take the series from the A’s. However, they’ll have to get past veteran crafty lefty Alex Wood. Wood has historically been great at limiting barrels, but his strikeout rate has dipped precipitously over the past couple of years. Maybe the Mariners can keep the strikeouts in the single digits—a low bar, but one this 2024 team has so far had trouble clearing—and get to Wood before Oakland is able to unleash the terrifying back end of their bullpen.

Lineups:

A lefty on the mound for Oakland + day game following night game = lineup shuffle. Lefty-crushing DMo takes the top spot, while Josh Rojas gets an off-day. Seby Zavala will do the catching.

Today’s game information:

Game time: 1:10 PT

TV: ROOT Sports NW, with Dave Sims and Mike Blowers

Radio: 710 AM Seattle Sports, with Rick Rizzs and Aaron Goldsmith

Today in Mariners history:

  • 1984: Mariners rookie and overall Extremely Nice Person Alvin Davis broke his nose on a ground ball that jumped up and got him in the face. I wish only suffering in this life and the next upon said ball.
  • 2011: The Mariners lost at Baltimore, 1-2, in 12 innings, despite Jason Vargas’s nine shutout innings. Vargas became the 4th pitcher in club history to record a no-decision while throwing at least 9.0 shutout innings and the first since 1995.
  • 2015: The Mariners hit six home runs for the first time since 2004 as they defeat the Padres, 11-4. Mike Zunino had two of those homers, along with Kyle Seaer, Logan Morrison, Justin Ruggiano and Nelson Cruz.
