Douglas Orellana, Alex Ramírez Excel On Saturday

0 11

En route to lowering his season ERA to 1.11 for High-A Brooklyn, Douglas Orellana struck out ten Rome Emperors in the Cyclones victory. Conversely, Dom Hamel‘s struggles for Triple-A Syracuse persisted as Syracuse (Triple-A) dropped their Saturday game against Lehigh Valley.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets (21-15) 2, Lehigh Valley IronPigs (13-22) 3
BOX SCORE

Despite a Luke Ritter homer, Syracuse’s offense was held in check as the Mets lost the penultimate game of their series against Lehigh Valley. Tallying seven hits on the evening, including two by Ritter, Syracuse could only muster two runs.

Catcher Joe Hudson provided the other run for the Mets with his fifth-inning home run, his first of the year. The IronPigs were led by Jim Haley and David Dahl, both of whom provided run-scoring hits, including Dahl’s game-winning sixth-inning, run-scoring single.

Even though Luisangel Acuña had a rough day at the plate, he still showed off his leather at second base while displaying his positional flexibility – he has started games at second base, shortstop, and centerfield for Syracuse.

  • RHP Dom Hamel (6.59) 2 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 5 BB, 4 K (40 of 76 pitches for strikes)
  • LHP Tyler Jay (1.46) 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Drew Smith (4.50) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K
  • RHP David Griffin (17.36) 1 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 0 K
  • RHP Cole Suler (3.60)  1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K
  • LHP Josh Walker (2.51) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K

Dom Hamel’s struggles this season continued through his start on Saturday. He only lasted 2 2/3 innings, giving up two runs and a shocking five walks.

Per FanGraphs, through seven starts this season, Hamel has registered his highest BB% (14.9%) and lowest K% (26.4%) of his career and his highest FIP as a minor leaguer. While he could still be adjusting to Triple-A batters, his performance has become worrisome as he was expected to jump to major league-caliber this year, and he has yet to meet those expectations so far.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (18-12) 10, Portland Sea Dogs (16-14) 7
BOX SCORE

The Rumble Ponies earned a comeback victory after a big seventh inning led by the top of the batting order. Rowdey Jordan earned a first-inning walk that opened the scoring for the game, which was later matched by the Sea Dogs when Blaze Jordan scored on a balk by starting pitcher, Troy Miller.

Portland took the lead in the bottom of the third inning after an Alex Binelas three-run homer, capping off a big four-run frame. Binghamton would score nine unanswered runs between the fifth and eighth innings, with big hits coming from Kevin Parada, Alex Ramírez, and Rhylan Thomas.

Jeremiah Jackson put the finishing touches on the victory with an eighth-inning two-run home run to left field over the “Maine Monster.”

  • RHP Troy Miller (5.75) 2 1/3 IP, 5 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 1 K, (24 of 48 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Luis Moreno (5.11) 2 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Jordan Geber (0.00) 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, BB, 3 K
  • RHP Nolan Clenney (3.75) 3 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, BB, 1 K

Miller had a rough outing, allowing most of Portland’s runs in only 2 2/3 innings of work. Binghamton’s bullpen did an excellent job limiting the Sea Dogs’ offense, especially after they secured the big lead in the third inning.

In his first outing after being called up from Brooklyn, Jordan Geber earned the win while pitching to the tune of one hit, striking out three and runs in two innings.

High-A

Rome Emperors (15-14) 1, Brooklyn Cyclones (18-13) 2
BOX SCORE

Brooklyn only collected four hits in the evening, but it was enough behind elite pitching from the Cyclones staff. William Lugo’s first-inning single opened the scoring for the Cyclones. Brooklyn wouldn’t score again until the seventh inning when Wilfredo Lara hit his game-winning RBI single that scored Nick Morabito.

  • RHP Douglas Orellana (1.11) 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 10 K, 2 WP (44 of 70 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Brett Banks (2.84) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K
  • RHP Diosmerky Taveras (8.68) 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 0 K
  • RHP Jake Stevenson (0.00) 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Josh Hejka (1.64) 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 0 K
  • RHP Joshua Cornielly (5.23) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K

With a career ERA of 4.37, Douglas Orellana has been outperforming his previous benchmarks significantly this season. He continues to open eyes within the minor league community, especially after his ten-strikeout game Saturday evening against Rome.

Orellana has dropped his season WHIP to a minuscule 0.98 and has not allowed a home run the entire season. Although his expected FIP (3.79) is higher than his actual FIP (2.55), there is reason to be excited for the 22-year-old right-hander because of his elite strikeout stuff and low average against (.143).

Low-A

St. Lucie Mets (12-20) 4, Bradenton Marauders (14-18) 3
BOX SCORE

St. Lucie scored two first-inning runs via a Jeffry Rosa home run that scored Marco Vargas. Rosa’s homer had an exit velocity of 102 mph and was his second in as many days.

Bradenton put up three runs in the fourth inning, but St Lucie responded at the top of the fifth with another home run, a solo shot from Estarling Mercado. A sixth-inning Marauder score due to a wild pitch would be the game’s final run, giving Bradenton the 3-2 victory.

  • RHP Wyatt Hudepohl (3.81) 5 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 4 BB, 2 K (55 of 92 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Juan Arnaud (1.29) 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RHP Saul Garcia (4.32) 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 K

St Lucie’s bullpen was solid after Hudepohl allowed four earned runs. Juan Arnaud came in to relieve Hudepohl in the sixth inning, earning two strikeouts and lowering his ERA to 1.29.
