Senga Throwing Bullpen Session; Raley Shut Down

0 6

Manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters on Friday that ace Kodai Senga is set to throw a bullpen session on Friday as he works his way back from a shoulder injury that has kept him out since spring training. He may follow it up with another bullpen or depart on a rehab assignment depending on how it transpires. The right-hander is eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on May 27. The team has said it expects him to be ready for a return in late May or early June.

The news is not as positive regarding reliever Brooks Raley. Mendoza told reporters that the left-handed reliever is not close to a return from an elbow injury and will be re-evaluated by doctors in addition to being shut down for the time being. Raley was initially placed on the injured list on April 21 after turning in eight scoreless appearances to open the season. Mendoza stated it is too early to tell if his season is over.

Reliever Drew Smith, who is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA and one save in 10 appearances, will toss another rehab inning on Saturday and then possibly be activated according to Newsday’s Laura Albanese. The right-hander was placed on the 15-day IL on April 27 after an MRI showed inflammation in his pitching shoulder. He completed an inning for Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.
