O’s Rattle Yankees In 4-2 Win

0 5

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees 4-2 on Tuesday evening. Actually, in some ways the Yankees helped by beating themselves. In the second inning Anthony Santander (1 for 3, 2B, R, BB) led off with a double that for some reason Anthony Rizzo tracked into right field and dropped between him and Juan Soto. Further insult was added when Jordan Westburg (1 for 4) reached base on a Gleyber Torres throwing error, allowing Santander to score the O’s first run. Prior to that Torres hit Santander in the shoulder with a throw to third base.

The defensive miscues got to Yankees starter Nestor Cortes who was seen mumbling to himself and at one point slamming the rosin bag down on the mound.

The home half of the fourth was the turning point in the game. Doubles by Jorge Mateo (1 for 4, 2B, R) and James McCann (1 for 4, 2B, R, RBI) plated a run and then back-to-back-to-back singles by Colton Cowser (1 for 3, R), Gunnar Henderson (1 for 3, RBI, BB) and Adley Rutschman (2 for 4, RBI) put two additional runs on the board.

A stellar performance by Dean Kremer (2-2) kept the Yankees off balance. Kremer, the beneficiary of three double plays, allowed 2 runs, both solo homeruns, on 4 hits with 4 walks and 4 strike outs over 7.0 innings in earning the win. One of the homeruns allowed was a 447 ft. blast by Soto onto Eutaw Strees and is now the second longest homerun in Camden Yards history behind the Henderson blast to Boog’s Bar-B-Que last season.

Keegan Akin gave up a hit and struck out 1 in 0.2 innings of relief.

Jacob Webb (1.1 IP, 3 K) earned his first save and came close to thowing an immaculate inning in the ninth.
