After winning back-to-back South Side Sox Player of the Week awards, Danny Mendick earned his promotion to the White Sox. Mendick was swapped for Lenyn Sosa, who picked up right where Mendick left off for the Knights. Sosa collected seven hits, and three of those left the park. Sosa also hit three doubles, so his slugging percentage (1.000) was off the charts. Overall, he slashed .368/.381/1.000 to lead the way for the Knights offense. Sosa’s performance went a long way for the Knights, who finished 4-2 during the week.

Jake Eder 6 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 8 K

The Barons went 5-1 for the second week in a row, and they have raced to the top of the Southern League standings. The pitching staff did a lot of heavy lifting this week, but Ky Bush was the MVP, as both of his starts went about as well as they could have gone. Bush delivered 11 shutout innings while only allowing six hits and striking out 14.

There were a few close runner-ups in the Player of the Week race, as the Barons did more than shut down opposing offenses. Brooks Baldwin and Wilfred Veras were both very difficult for opposing pitchers to retire: Baldwin finished 11-for-24 with five doubles, while Wilfred Veras went 10-for-22 with a homer and a double.

2024 Birmingham Barons Players of the Week

Drew Thorpe (April 8-14)
Edgar Quero (April 15-21)

Riley Gowens 5 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K
Tanner McDougal 5 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 9 K

The Dash also performed well overall, finishing the week with a solid 4-2 record. Winston-Salem benefited from several strong pitching performances, but none of the pitchers were better than Manuel Veloz. Veloz has been exclusively a reliever, but he finished in a three-way tie for the team lead in innings pitched this week. Veloz did not allow any runs, and he only allowed two hits during his five innings of work. Veloz spent nearly all of last season with the Cannon Ballers, but he has adjusted nicely to the higher level of play, as he has a 1.93 ERA overall in 9 1⁄3 innings with the Dash.

The Dash did not get any monster performances from any hitters, but Wes Kath led the way with a 6-for-16 week that included two doubles. Kath had a .944 OPS during the week and now has an impressive .853 OPS this season.

Jake Peppers 5 2⁄3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K

The Cannon Ballers are now better than .500, and they have Caden Connor, this week’s MVP, to thank for that. Connor could hardly be stopped this week, as he slashed .417/.500/.625 with the team’s only home run. Connor is now slashing .276/.376/.421, as he has found many ways to get on base.

Third baseman Ryan Galanie, who was close to leading the way for last week’s honor, deserves honorable mention. Galanie, who has now put back-to-back great weeks together, has made the most of his playing time this year. Galanie’s slash line in 43 plate appearances is .368/.442/.579.
