Keith Law Releases His Top 20 Mets Prospects
The Athletic’s Keith Law released his list of the top 20 Mets prospects heading into the 2023 season.
Law was very kind in his opening statement about the depth they’ve been able to build in the minor leagues after a certain GM did so much to gut the system.
For trading away as much talent as the Mets have in the past four years, they still have a pretty robust farm system thanks to some great drafts and success in international free agency, notably with their higher-dollar picks in both areas. All their first-rounders from 2014 through 2020 either became decent big leaguers (with positive WAR) or were part of significant trades for major-league players, while their international scouting department signed a future top-100 prospect in 2017, 2018 and 2019. This system has no business still being where it is after so much attrition.
The top of this list isn’t surprising with catcher Francisco Alvarez at the No. 1 spot followed by third baseman Brett Baty at No. 2.
Five prospects, Alvarez, Baty, catcher Kevin Parada, outfielder Alex Ramirez, and shortstop Ronny Mauricio made Law’s Top 100 prospect list this year. They are also your top five Mets prospects.
The Mets are still rather top-heavy for prospects and will likely fall down a few rungs this season in organizational rankings when Alvarez and Baty eventually graduate from the prospect lists.
Where the organization needs the most help is in the pitching department. Their top pitching prospect Matt Allan announced he will undergo what is essentially a second Tommy John surgery and dropped to Law’s 20th-ranked Mets prospect.
Here’s how Law’s list shakes out:
- Francisco Alvarez, C
- Brett Baty, 3B
- Kevin Parada, C
- Alex Ramirez, OF
- Ronny Mauricio, SS
- Jett Williams, SS
