Men's Basketball 

The Spires went 0-2 this past week with losses to Tabor College and York University. The Spires are now 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the KCAC. On Wednesday night against Tabor, the first half started fast for USM as Deshaud St. Martin, and Quentin Williams combined for the first nine points for the Spires to give them the early 9-3 lead. A scoring streak for the Blue Jays put them ahead 17-11 midway through the half. Tabor and USM traded baskets the rest of the half as the Blue Jays went into halftime up 40-30. Saint Mary made key shots to stay in the game coming out of halftime, but Tabor kept up with the offensive pressure. A William's three pulled the Spires within six to make the score 46-40, but Tabor again went on a run and capitalized off of mistakes by the Spires. Mid-range jump shots kept USM in it for the most part, but it was not enough as Tabor closed things out, winning 83-70. On Saturday in York, Joe Burgos got Saint Mary going with two threes and a mid-range jumper to tie things up at 10-10 just five minutes in. Cam Southern and Williams also had threes, giving the Spires a two-point lead. Saint Mary then went on a 14-2 scoring run that put them down just 31-30. Southern made his free throws late in the first half to send the Spires into the locker down 37-36. Saint Mary and York went back and forth throughout the second half, where York went on a scoring run of their own late in the game that helped them pull away and beat the Spires 74-67. St. Martin recorded his second double-double of the year, while Burgos had 20 points. The Spires are set to play Southwestern College on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Ryan Sports Center.

Men's Basketball Loses on the Road to York

Women's Basketball

The Women's Basketball team went 0-2 this past week with a loss to Tabor College and a loss to York University. The Spires are now 3-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play, heading into a matchup with Southwestern College. On Wednesday against Tabor, Saint Mary started the game with a 13-2 scoring run that ended with a three from Alanis Delgado. However, the Blue Jays took the lead right before the end of the first quarter. Alex Specht and Jerrica Johnson made layups to open the second quarter that gave Saint Mary a 21-18 lead. Tabor then made a layup and three three-point shots in a row to go up eight on the Spires. Delgado made another three right before the end of the half to make the score 33-26 in favor of Tabor. The Blue Jays kept up the offensive production to start the second half, building a ten-point lead at the end of the third, 53-43. Saint Mary started the fourth and final quarter rallying back to get within two points of the Blue Jays. Johnson and Paige Pendley brought the Spires within one point, making the score 59-60. Tabor made two important free throws to take a three-point 62-59 lead with just three seconds left. Saint Mary was unable to get a shot off in the last seconds of the game to tie things up, losing 62-59. On Saturday, the first half started fast for York as they got out to an early 9-0 lead. Alanis Delgado's three-pointer got the Spires on the board, but the Panthers still held the 16-6 lead. Alex Specht, Tanea Sims, and Jerrica Johnson scored for Saint Mary to keep the Spires in it at 29-14 late in the second quarter. A couple of late scores by Delgado made the score 32-21 at halftime. Saint Mary came out of the gate strong in the second half as they scored thirteen unanswered points to take a 34-32 lead. The Spires went back and forth with the Panthers as Chyanne Aaron helped USM tie the game at 43-43 as the third quarter ended. The fourth quarter came down to the last minute, where York eventually took the lead with little time left. Another three-pointer by Delgado brought the Spires within three, but Panther free throws closed out the game, making the final 67-61. The Spires will host Southwestern College at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Ryan Sports Center.

Women's Basketball Drops to Tabor in Close 62-59 Loss

Wrestling

The University of Saint Mary Men's Wrestling team hosted Northwestern College for their first home dual of the year on Saturday. The Spires had multiple dominant performances that led to a team victory over the Raiders by a score of 43-9. Saint Mary had two early falls from Brody Gee and a win by decision from Freddie Barajas that gave the Spires a comfortable lead. Hartwell Taylor was able to add to the Saint Mary lead after winning his 141 bout by decision. Up next was Austin Almaguer, who wrestled at 149 for the Spires and nearly won by tech fall. After Almaguer was Johnny Cash Thomas, who wrestled in the 157-weight class, he made quick work of his Northwestern opponent and won by fall to extend the Spire's lead. Maxx Demann helped out Saint Mary in the 174-weight class with a pin as well. To finish the day, senior Cody Adams pinned Northwestern's heavyweight roughly halfway through the first round. The Spires will compete in the Doane Open on December 3 in Crete, Nebraska.

Men's Soccer

The University of Saint Mary Men's soccer team played the Central Methodist Eagles in the opening round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament on Thursday, resulting in an 8-0 loss. The game started fast for the Eagles as they scored within the first ten minutes to make the score 1-0. Just eleven minutes later, Central Methodist again found the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead. A shot by Shemari Hibbert, paired with a corner kick by Paul Trejo, gave Saint Mary a chance to get on the board, but they could not capitalize. The Eagles scored again with fifteen minutes left in the half to give them the 3-0 lead. The second half started much like the first as the Eagles scored right out of the gate, taking a comfortable 4-0 lead. Saint Mary had more chances to get on the board with shots by Jan Stachura and Homero Gonzalez, but they never found the back of the net. Another goal by Central Methodist gave the Eagles all they needed to cruise the rest of the game. Three more late-minute scores made the final score 8-0 as the clock ran out on the Spires. Saint Mary wrapped up the season with an overall record of 13-5-3 which was one of the best seasons in school history.

Swimming

The University of Saint Mary Men's and Women's Swim team hosted the Sterling Warriors and Maryville University on Saturday. Both teams successfully took first place, breaking six school records on their way to victory. Halfway through the meet, four seniors were honored for the dedication and hard work they had given to the program. Blake Jorgens and Luke Taylor were big contributors to the team's success, helping the Spires win four events throughout the day. Sophomore Blake Jorgens achieved three NAIA B cuts and broke his 100yrd Breaststroke record. These performances gave the Spires a score of 210 and a first-place finish. Grace Sanford and Ayla Pierce were major contributors on the women's side of things, helping the team in multiple relay events and breaking a combined five school records. Pierce, Sanford, Kaelyn Lowery, and Kelsey Taylor achieved NAIA B cuts in multiple events throughout the day. These wins gave the women's team a score of 159 and a first-place finish. The Spires will compete next against William Jewel at 1 p.m. on January 13 in Lansing, Kansas.

Men's and Women's Swim Place First in Senior Day Meet

Cross Country

The University of Saint Mary Men's and Women's Cross-Country team competed in the 2022 NAIA National Championships Friday morning. Both teams were successful by coming in the top 15 of both races and having multiple All-Americans. Brigg Merritt crossed the finish line first for the Spires in the 8000M race, running a 24:54.5, and finishing thirtieth overall. His time also made him the only All-American for the Spires this year. Following Merrit and rounding out the top five runners for Saint Mary were Brendan Erwin (25:06.1), Ryan Heline (25:11.5), Liam Neidig (25:21.9), and Elvis Rojas-King (25:36.4). These top five runners gave Saint Mary a team score of 285 and an eleventh-place finish. In the women's 5000M race, Alyssa Armendariz led Saint Mary, running a 17:47.3 and coming in fifteenth overall. Right behind Armendariz was Riley Hiebert, who ran a 17:53.5 and came in twenty-second place. With these times, both runners achieved All-American status. Rounding out the rest of the top five for Saint Mary was Maddy Walter-Sherretts, who ran an 18:22.6 and placed forty-fifth overall. Behind her was Reagan Hiebert, who ran an 18:40.0, and Katherine Madsen, who ran a 19:14.5. These top five runners gave Saint Mary a team score of 251 points and earned them a seventh-place team finish. This race concluded the cross-country season for Saint Mary. Most runners will look ahead to the indoor track season, which begins December 3 at Washburn University.
