Braves Embarrass Mets 13-1 In Series Opener

The Mets aren’t off to a great start in Atlanta.

New York was beaten and battered by the Braves on Monday at Truist Park. Atlanta scored eight runs in the sixth inning in what would ultimately be a 13-1 win.

Prior to Monday’s game, the Mets received the bad news they’d be without defensive superstar Luis Guillorme and catcher Tomas Nido. Although them being there would have hardly impacted this one.

Carlos Carrasco wasn’t at his best. He allowed three runs in an abbreviated start, cut short due to a rain delay and possible injury. In the bottom of the second he allowed back-to-back home runs to William Contreras and Eddie Rosario. The Braves tacked on a third run with two outs when Mark Canha lost the ball in the sky and allowed a popup to fall safely.

Before the inning finished, the Mets and Braves entered a rain delay. Carrasco returned to the mound following the 55-minute delay. He was seen grabbing his left side after issuing a walk and a groundout to finish out the inning.

Things wouldn’t improve.

Adonis Medina put up an all-time stinker. He allowed one inherited runner to score in the fourth inning and a run of his own to put the Braves up 5-0 while the Mets only two hits against Spencer Strider were infield singles.

Medina actually had a 1-2-3 fifth inning. It wasn’t until the sixth that everything went wrong. The first seven Braves reached base safely. Five of the runners were against Medina, two of them were against Mychal Givens. By the time the Mets recorded an out, the Braves lead was 10-1.

The jarring inning wouldn’t end until Travis D’Arnaud hit a three-run home run and Vaughn Grissom doubled.

The Mets at least scored a pity run during the fifth inning. Jeff McNeil opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a throwing error. He scored on an Eduardo Escobar groundout.

For the first time all season the Mets gave up. Their starting pitcher for the seventh inning was deadline-acquisition Darin Ruf.

Ruf retired the side of Ronald Acuna Jr., Dansby Swanson, and Matt Olson on four pitches.

New York needs to find a way to move on. With seven more games this week against NL East opponents the Mets need to go at least .500 to remain atop the division.

They’re not helping themselves either. Escobar isn’t healthy enough to swing the bat from the right side. Their move to help him and the now-injured Guillorme was to add Deven Marrero to the roster. While Marrero can field three infield positions, he began the MLB season as a member of the Long Island Ducks.

The Mets could use a jolt following this loss and maybe it slightly opens the door for the call-up of Brett Baty. Baty’s defense is poor but his bat can make an immediate impact. It’s hard to ignore the impact the Braves rookies are making on their lineup when they score four runs against you from the eighth and ninth positions in the batting order.

New York has the opportunity to rebound with their starting pitching. Taijuan Walker is scheduled tomorrow while Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom will get the ball on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Mets division lead is now 4.5 games.
