[Baseball] Arnone Belts Two HR's as Hawk Comeback Falls Just Short Against COI

0 4

WADDELL, Ariz. – The San Diego Christian College Hawks mounted a comeback, but eventually fell to the College of Idaho Coyotes 7-9 in game three of the Coach Calderone Classic baseball tournament in Arizona Saturday morning.

Early unearned runs by the College of Idaho put the Hawks in the position of chaser almost immediately. Freshman pitcher, Jack Schlotman, pitched well for SDCC throwing six complete innings while allowing only 7 hits, 2 walks, and 4 earned runs. The four runs scored off of errors would ultimately be the difference in the game.

Down 0-8 after 3 ½ innings, San Diego Christian's Jake Luther began a comeback attempt with a line-drive double to left field. An Anthony Macchia single would plate Luther and Tre Pankratz, who had walked earlier in the inning.

In the sixth inning, Hawks catcher, Alec Arnone would belt a two-run homer to cut the deficit in half. Arnone picked up where he left off on Friday, going 2-for-4 with 2 homers and 3 RBI in the game.

After gifting the early runs, the San Diego Christian pitching and defense settled in allowing only one run over the final five innings. The offense continued to chip away at the Coyote lead, scoring twice more in the seventh on a Davin Burroughs triple, and once again in the eighth when Arnone crushed his second homer of the game.

Unfortunately, the comeback would fall short but would give the young Hawks something to build on.
