Geren started off with the Oakland A’s in 2003 where he bounced around between being their bullpen coach and bench coach until 2007 when they promoted Geren to manager. He held that position until 2011 as he put together a 334-376 record with no playoff appearances. In 2012 the Mets hired Geren as their bench coach. He was with the club through the 2015 season. Geren has held the same position with the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2016.
Geren also has experience as a minor league manager. He spent four seasons with an A’s minor league affiliate. Following Bruce Bochy‘s retirement after the 2019 season, Geren was under consideration with the San Fransisco Giants, before they hired Gabe Kapler.
Additionally, according to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Ragazzo, new Mets ace Max Scherzer would like Buck Showalter to be the team’s new manager.
