Another Intradivision World Series

0 9

We’ve had Houston-LA in the World Series, and now we get a second matchup of teams from the pre-1994 NL West. Yes, back then MLB was geographically challenged with teams like Atlanta and Cincinnati playing in the west while teams that were actually much further west of them like Chicago and St. Louis, played in the East.

But thanks to the staggered realignments over the past 27 years, we have a decent amount of potential intradivisional World Series. To get one you have to have either Houston or Milwaukee, since those are the teams that switched leagues. But Houston faces an old intradivisional opponent in any series against a NL team that isn’t Philly, NY, Washington, Miami, or Colorado. Milwaukee has every AL team except for Seattle, Texas, Anaheim, and Oakland. They also already played an intradivisional playoff series against the Yankees in 1981 and their 1982 World Series loss to the Cardinals was a matchup of future intradivisional rivals.

So, to honor this auspicious matchup, I’m hoping for some 1980’s Atlanta and Houston stars throwing out the first pitches at these games. How about Dale Murphy and Mike Scott for starters?
