The Scottsdale Scorpions and Glendale Desert Dogs battled back and forth on Friday afternoon, but thanks to a three-run bomb in the seventh off the bat of Rays prospect Curtis Mead, the Dogs ended up muzzled 4-3. Sox pitching prospect McKinley Moore made his AFL debut and while it went off to a shaky start—he walked the first two batters faced, Matt Dyer and Jeter Downs, with Dyer stealing second and third—he induced a strikeout and a double play to escape unscathed.

Moore gave way to Caleb Freeman for the ninth, a move that was made much more often in reverse in Winston-Salem this season, with Moore usually taking the mound to close. Freeman walked Mead with one out, but then got a double play ground ball from the next batter to end the Scorpions half of the inning.

José Rodríguez went 1-for-4 from the eighth spot in the lineup, that one a high-leverage seventh-inning single to put runners on the corners with two outs and the lead only just relinquished in the top half. Yolbert Sánchez, batting immediately after, was enduring a fairly rare 0-for-3, though, and grounded out to end the threat. Sánchez did walk with two outs in the ninth after Rodríguez grounded out, but was stranded and might even still be there now.
