[Women's Golf] Hawks Tee Off In Program's Inaugural Event
SURPRISE, Ariz. – The San Diego Christian College women's golf team teed off for the first time ever in Hawk history, competing in the program's inaugural event at the OUAZ Fall Invite at Sterling Grove Golf and Country Club. Coach Matt Ward's team did not disappoint taking 5th place out of 8 teams and finishing above GSAC teams, William Jessup, The Master's University, and the CalPac's Park University.
The Hawks were led by junior, Lilyanna Rodriguez (83, 83; 166) and freshman, Serena Singh (82, 84; 166) who tied for 20th place in the 51 player field.
Sophomore Madeline Jones was not far behind in 28th (90, 83; 173) improving her second-round score by 7 strokes and freshman, Kylee Gerber, competing in her first-ever collegiate match, shaved 8 strokes off of her first-round total to round out the team.
Coach Ward reflected on his team's inaugural event, "I'm thrilled to say that we 'officially' have a women's program now at SDCC! It was a very emotional day for me on Monday. Fortunately, I was able to see each individual player make their first tee shot for the women's golf program at SDCC. It was a very stressful day for all of them as well. We had to wait for over a year to play our first event and then we had to delay that start for an additional 2 weeks. We also had 1 player who made the trip but couldn't compete. So, all of that combined with it being the first event in school history made it difficult for the ladies to be relaxed. Tuesday was a much more relaxed bunch and it showed on the course. Their demeanor and body language were so positive and their play benefitted from that change. I simply couldn't be more proud of, and happy for, these young ladies who have endured so much to get this program off the ground. I'm certain that they don't quite understand the gravity of the situation right now, but in 10-20 years and beyond, they can all look back and say that they were the ones that got this all started, and I couldn't be happier for them!"
