Mets’ first-round draft pick Pete Crow-Armstrong spoke to the media on Saturday as he begins his first big league camp.

Crow-Armstrong, just 18, out of Harvard-Westlake High School, is already getting to play with the big guys this spring as he kickstarts his development. He said that he was shocked when he got an invite to spring training, but emphasized how valuable this time has been for him and how grateful he is.

“In the last week, I’ve learned more than I have in the last year,” he said.

During the long quarantine hiatus, he said he was in the gym six days a week, and hitting five to seven days a week

Being a young kid, he said he’s learned a lot from some of the more experienced guys in camp, such as Kevin Pillar, Albert Almora and Mallex Smith. He’s also been impressed with some of the other young talent the Mets have invited to camp.

“There are some dudes in our system,” he said.

Going into spring training and beyond, Crow-Armstrong is grateful and fortunate to be where he is and is only going to continue learning.

“I play because I love it and I play because I want to be really, really great at this sport,” he said.
