Passan: Nationals and Brad Hand Reach One-Year Deal

0 11

Merely a week ago, it was incorrectly reported that the Mets and closer Brad Hand had reached a deal to bring the reliever to Flushing. Today, he instead joins a division rival.

After a long-awaited decision from the All-Star, Hand agreed to a one-year, $10.5 million contract with the Washington Nationals, pending a physical.

MLB Network’s Mark Feinsand reported yesterday that Hand’s free agency was nearing a conclusion, and that he wanted to make a decision by the end of the weekend; and decide he did, as the news broke just as the weekend came to a close.

Hand has been an elite reliever in the league for multiple years now, most recently with the Cleveland Baseball Team, where he sported a 2.05 ERA over 22 innings pitched in 2020. His last full season came in 2019, where he pitched to a 3.30 ERA over 57.1 IP and an impressive 84 strikeouts.

According to Jeff Passan, Hand’s fastball isn’t as powerful and effective as it once was, but his slider remains a dominant pitch. He will join a Nationals bullpen that includes effective relievers like Daniel Hudson and Will Harris.

The Mets’ offseason search for another reliever will continue on for at least one more day, as arms like Trevor Rosenthal remain on the market.

Meanwhile, Hand’s signing to the Nationals just further tightens the race for the NL East crown, as the Braves, Mets, Nationals, Phillies, and Marlins all could be competitive.
