MLB News: Rangers Hire Chris Young as GM

0 8

The Texas Rangers have announced that former Mets pitcher Chris Young has been hired to serve as their new general manager and will work under their president of baseball operations, Jon Daniels.

Young, now 41, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Prates as a third round pick in the 2000 MLB Amateur Draft. He made his major league debut for the Rangers in 2004 and played with them through the end of the 2005 season before being traded to the San Diego Padres.

Young signed with the Mets as a free agent before the 2011 season and spent two seasons with the team, posting a 5-9 record with a 3.76 ERA in 24 starts. He spent another four seasons in MLB with the Mariners and Royals, winning a World Series with Kansas City in 2015, before retiring after the 2017 season after 13 seasons.

Following retirement from playing, Young was hired by the Commissioner’s Office in 2018 as vice president of on-field operations, initiative and strategy. He replaced Joe Torre as senior vice president in early 2020.

Young was a candidate for the Mets’ GM position as recently as Sunday before withdrawing himself from consideration due to family reasons. It is likely that the Dallas, Texas native chose the Arlington-based Rangers for this reason.
