The RHP was DFA’d on Thursday

The Oakland A’s released pitcher Daniel Gossett on Monday, the team announced. To take his spot in the 60-man player pool, minor league pitcher Ben Bracewell was added and will report to the club’s alternate training camp in San Jose.

The 27-year-old Gossett was designated for assignment last Thursday, to make 40-man roster space for the activation of fellow pitcher Daniel Mengden from the injured list. The fact that Gossett was released means he cleared waivers without being claimed by any other team.

The right-hander was a 2nd-round draft pick by the A’s in 2014, and worked his way up to an MLB debut by 2017. However, he never quite found success in the majors, and midway through 2018 he was derailed by Tommy John surgery. He missed the entire 2019 season, though he did return afterward for a handful of promising innings in the minor league Arizona Fall League.

Gossett, MLB career: 5.91 ERA, 115⅔ ip, 84 Ks, 39 BB, 26 HR, 5.67 FIP

With Gossett out of the picture, the A’s MLB-experienced rotation depth is now one fewer. Mengden is already filling in briefly for Jesus Luzardo and will likely shift to the bullpen upon the rookie lefty’s imminent return to starting, and then Paul Blackburn is next up in the San Jose camp. Then it’s just prospects, like Grant Holmes, Daulton Jefferies, and James Kaprielian.

Now there’s one more minor league name to add to that list at San Jose, in Bracewell. He’s not exactly a prospect, at age 29, but he’s made a gradual rise up the farm system since signing out of the independent Frontier League in 2014. The right-hander was at his best last summer, when he was able to succeed in the hitter’s paradise of Las Vegas and the Pacific Coast League.

Bracewell, 2019 AAA: 3.13 ERA, 72 ip, 70 Ks, 38 BB, 4 HR, 4.32 FIP

He’s never pitched in the majors before, so if he were to find his way to Oakland then he’d be making his MLB debut.
