Poche’s season over due to torn elbow ligament

The lefty reliever will miss all of 2020 and likely most of 2021.
The Rays announced Tuesday that left-handed reliever Colin Poche tore his UCL. He was placed on the injured list, and catcher Kevan Smith was added to the 40-man roster in his place.
Poche has been recommended for Tommy John surgery, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin. The 26 year old previously had Tommy John surgery in 2014.
Rehabilitation from this surgery typically takes over a year, so if it’s scheduled timely, a return late in the 2021 season is not out of the question.
In his rookie season, Poche had a 4.70 ERA in 51 2⁄3 innings but with a 34.8% strikeout rate and 9.2% walk rate.
Left-handed batters had a .625 OPS against him in 2019, so the reemergence of Jose Alvarado plus potential contributions from Anthony Banda and Jalen Beeks in whatever roles they’re asked to fill could be key.
