Former A’s minor leaguer Miguel Marte dies of coronavirus complications

Former minor league baseball player Miguel Marte died this week “due to complications from COVID-19,” the Oakland A’s announced on Friday. Marte played his entire pro career in the A’s system, from 2008-12. He was 30 years old.

The Marte family has set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe, and you can click here to donate. According to the writeup within, Marte passed away on Tuesday, April 28. He is survived by his wife Jasmin, and twin children Isabella and Miguel Angel.

Marte, a Dominican Republic native, first played for the A’s organization in 2008 in the Dominican Summer League. He made the jump to the U.S. in 2010, reaching as high as short-season Low-A Vermont in his final year of play in 2012. On defense he played mostly first base, with a handful of games at catcher and in right field. At the plate, he posted a career line of .251/.320/.373 in 227 games (813 plate appearances).

In his time in Vermont, Marte was briefly teammates with notable names such as Matt Olson, Addison Russell, Daniel Robertson, Bruce Maxwell, and Ryan Dull.

This isn’t the A’s first brush with the effects of coronavirus. Minor league manager Webster Garrison, currently the skipper of one of Oakland’s Arizona Rookie League teams, was diagnosed in March and spent over three weeks on a ventilator. The 54-year-old was able to get off the ventilator in mid-April, though he’s still not done with his full recovery.
