MLB Announces Rule Changes

0 6

MLB announced rule changes for the 2020 season on Wednesday in a press release.

The topics covered in it were the three batter minimum, active roster limits, injured list reinstatements (15 days instead of 10), option periods for pitchers (15 days instead of 10), and challenge time reductions for managers (20 seconds instead of 30).

Active roster limits had multiple sub-sections in which they discussed how the rosters will be expanded to 26 during the regular season up until August 31 and then will shift to 28-man rosters in September. Once the postseason begins, the 26-man rosters will be restored.

They also discussed the two-way player designation largely enacted for the sake of Shohei Ohtani who will be starting for the and hitting Los Angeles Angels. It allows teams to still carry a maximum of 13 pitchers in addition to a two-way player rather than having to option a pitcher to make room for them.

Position players also now are only allowed to pitch in extra innings or if the team is winning or losing by more than six runs.

Lastly, teams will now have a 27th man on days where they are participating in a doubleheader. They are allowed to carry 14 pitchers during those games.
