Editorial in TB Times on Why Jane Castor should take the lead in Rays Stadium Talks

0 11

Reading the Editorial in the Times today (2/2/2020) on how Jane Castor should take the lead in the Rays Stadium Talks, and I came across two comments from Diane_Lexington in the Comments section of the piece which really stuck out for me. Lexington says and she wrote this a Month ago in the Comments section:

Jane Castor seems to be a just-get-it-done type of leader, so I think if anyone can figure out a way to get it done, she will be the one to do that. And, yes, if she can get the heavyweights behind her, including Jeff Vinik involved in some capacity, watch out—THAT would be a gamechanger. In spite of all of the perceived-to-be odds against it, I still think a full-time stadium gets built, and it gets built either in downtown Tampa or in Ybor City. If I had to bet, though, and as crazy as it seems now, I think it will eventually get built as part of that Water Street Tampa project—the last time I checked, there is still land there that can conceivably be maneuvered around creatively to make room for a stadium.

And just to confirm that there is still land available within that Water Street Tampa project, which could conceivably support a stadium—here is a recent update (January) on the Ardent Mills property, which some of us had reported on awhile back:

"In 2018, the developer of Water Street Tampa acquired the flour mill’s property in downtown Tampa to make way for future development…The Ardent Mills property has long been one of the most closely watched properties in downtown Tampa, and at one point was speculated to be a potential home for a new Tampa Bay Rays stadium." – Tampa Bay Business Journal, January 7, 2020

Here's my take on this. I agree with Lexington's comment here: If I'm Castor, I'm talking with Jeff Vinik, if I haven't already, and If I'm Vinik (maybe with Bill Gates), I'm giving the possibly of a new Rays Stadium on the Water Street Project a long hard look here. To get a new Rays stadium there would be the capper in that huge project. If Castor were to get a major hitter like Vinik was involved in this, it changes the game dramatically big time. At that point, it would perk Stu's interest and get the Rays the help needed to get that stadium built and he'd drop the Montreal nonsense in a nanosecond. The key to the whole thing here is that Castor had to be the one in control here that the Rays can see as the one person they can talk to and get a deal done. I really believe when push comes to shove, a full-time stadium deal in Tampa will get done either in Ybor or in Downtown Tampa.
