Renaissance Man: off a cliff-What gives?

0 23

Alex Gordon was enjoying a Renaissance. As of May 11, he was even matching the billion dollar club...Trout, .Harper, Machado ....while they passed him ( especially Trout) his Renaissance continued. As of 7/27, Alex was hitting .287, (including a dreadful 1 for 24 rough patch in early June.) He was on pace for 95 RBIs and his best season since 2011. Then the downward spiral began. From July 28 til Sat Aug 17, Alex is 5 for 62, down 29 points to .258. Given Sun, off, we will see if the bleeding stops as Royals go to Baltimore ( on the road, vs a lefty, not a combo that he does well with ...232 in each case)

My limited analytic skills see his K/BB ratio not way out of whack . Has he changed his approach ( ie chase rate.) .Too the naked eye, he seems to be hitting lots grounders to the right side , less taking the ball to center left...is that true? The only random thought I have is his placement in the. 2 hole. He seemed to thrive in the slot behind Mondesi & Whit. He’s hitting .186 in the 2 hole, with the bulk of those ABs coming in this slump( vs .290 in the 3 slot)

Who then in the 2 slot, til Mondesi returns ( whenever is he coming back?)...either Lopez or Cuthbert ( he of the current 0 for 28 skid). No easy answer although Lopez had some early success in the 2 slot. BTW, Dozier does just fine in the clean up spot. That’s all I got.

Anyone else?? Is there something in deep analytics? The Alex Renaissance story was one of the few bright spots in this dismal year. In the 38 games left, here’s hoping Alex can turn back to his July 27 first 105 game form.
