Revisiting my longtime Quest For Realmuto & adding Rotation Starters.
Why the Marlins Do this: An Influx of Prospects for Catcher J. R. Realmuto & A's paying half of the remaining $58 million due to Wei-Yin Chen over the next 3 years. ($9.66 x 3 years)
Why the A's Do this: Takes care of the A's two greatest needs going into 2019 & beyond. Who to better catch Wei-Yin Chen than J. R.?
- All Star Catcher Realmuto: Realmuto's skills behind the plate and working with pitchers puts him ahead of most MLB catchers. He is an ideal 2 year bridge to get both the A's Pitchers & Prospect Catcher Sean Murphy established. Realmuto's veteran hitting skills keeps him up front in any batting line up. Two years of his added offense will help cover break-in periods for Martini, Murphy, Barreto, White...
- Rotation SP & former ace Wei-Yin Chen: Completed his Re-hab year as a legit rotation starter again with 26 starts in 2018. Wei-Yin Chen is very stingy on HRs. O.co & the A's rejuvenated top defense are an ideal match! ...just keep Wei-Yin on a short leash when on road trips with the long relief ready.
We are dealing surplus on this, ...which becomes clearer on the A's 6 year flow charts below and players with 2021 ETAs. Also evident are the positive long term effects of upgrades & repairs on the offense, defense, & the A's tattered rotation by the addition of just these three players. The pitching that becomes available mid season and beyond is icing on the cake. I expect the A's will have pitching to trade after 2019. (chart)

- To Marlins: $29 million in savings, Jorge Mateo, Dustin Fowler, and one other player from the "Available for Trade Listing" or if preffered: $5 million Int'l Signings $$$ Space. Spending some dollars should cut the cost in prospects.
2021 ETA: Another dozen prospects expected. Players that can be switched for Mateo &/or Fowler if Marlins prefer. Names like Beck, Armenteros, Hannah, Kyler Murray, Eierman, Merrell, Allen, Campos, Vargas, Brito.
MLBTRADERUMORS.COM: "Unsurprisingly, it’s a major area of concern for Beane, who said this week that he and general manager David Forst – who, along with manager Bob Melvin, also just received an extension – want to "create a starting pitching group that Bob can rely on every day."
A's Eh!: ....I still say the A's have nothing to lose by going after Free Agent Patrick Corbin hard...
....$25 million in 2018 salaries is leaving as free agents, at bottom, and making Mike Fiers $9.7 & Gearrin $2.4 available may clear enough salary space for the A's to seriously consider adding the right hander. It would certainly make for a very interesting 2019 & beyond.
Why Patrick Corbin does this:
- 97 wins in 2018 without him or a rotation.
- J. R. Realmuto
- 5+ runs per game.
- Possibly MLB's best defense.
- Pitchers to challenge the top post season teams.
- Location, location, location.
- BUZZ & lots of it!
Having Realmuto as catcher could only help convince Aces like Patrick Corbin they are joining a winner.
