KNIGHTS WOMEN'S SOCCER HEADBUTT THE RAMS FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
BLUEFIELD, VA – The St. Andrews University women's soccer team locked horns with the Rams of Bluefield College this afternoon in Bluefield, Virginia and got into the win column for the first time this season. Playing on the Bluefield campus that is only about 150 feet from the state line between Virginia and West Virginia, The Knights won the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) match by the score of 2-0. Suffice it to say, the postgame victory celebration was heard in two states.
Of course, head coach Brandon Standridge was thrilled following the victory and deserves a big congratulations on getting his first win as a college coach. Following the game, he said, "I am delighted with the win against Bluefield today. It was the end result that we wanted. The girls are happy and positive and are looking forward to our next match on Wednesday. We have to continue to focus and improve day after day and work to get more goals that will result in another win. We will work hard to get another win on Wednesday at Columbia College and move forward in the conference."
Speaking of firsts, with 54:53 into the game, Knights midfielder/forward Madi Castro (SR/Hope Mills, NC) of nearby Cape Fear High School in Hope Mills, scored her first goal and the team's first goal of the season. Then 86:17 into the game, forward Kennedy Mayo (JR/Stokesdale, NC) put the icing on the "victory cake" with her first goal of the season. The Knights offense showed some assertiveness with 11 shots in the first half and 12 in the second for a total of 23, and 12 of the 23 were shots on goal. The Knights defense played just as assertively only allowing the Rams three shots with 0 shots on goal.
The Knights (1-6/1-5) will return to action Wednesday when they travel to Columbia, SC to face the Columbia College Koalas (4-7-1/3-5-1) at 7:00 p.m. The next home game for the Knights will be this Saturday, October 20th against the Truett McConnell University Bears. Kickoff is scheduled for high noon.
NOTE: The Columbia College website incorrectly indicates the Knights and Koalas play this Tuesday, October 16th at 7:00 p.m. The correct date and time is Wednesday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m.
