[Baseball] SAU Baseball Falls Short at Chowan
MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Baseball team fell 5-2 to non-conference D-2 foe Chowan University (NC) on the road Tuesday afternoon.
CHOWAN 5, SAU 2
Chowan got off to a 2-0 start scoring one run each off senior reliever Landon Kincaid (SR/Morganton, NC) (1-4) in the 2nd inning and freshman Devin Millan (FR/San Diego, CA) in the third inning. The duo combined to throw two innings allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, and 2 walks. Sophomore Davis O'Brien (SO/Kernersville, NC) started the game and threw a perfect first inning with a strikeout.
The Knights then got a run back in the 4th on a Ryne Dickens (SR/Reidsville, NC) RBI double. The score would remain 2-1 as sophomore relievers Cole Tysinger (SO/Lexington, NC) and Jonathan Crowe (SO/Jacksonville, FL) combined to throw 3 scoreless frames allowing 3 hits. However, in the 7th inning, Chowan would add another run off sophomore reliever Matthew Strickland (SO/Pembroke, NC) to go up 3-1. They would then add two more in the 8th off junior reliever Michael Wright (JR/Whitakers, NC) before freshman reliever Charles Tortorici (FR/Fredericksburg, VA) finished the inning scoreless.
SAU was only outhit 10-9, but could not get any quality rallies going against Chowan's pitching. SAU would trim Chowan's 5-1 lead down to three in the ninth scoring off an error as Dickens came around to score on senior Nolan Pierce (SR/Laurel Hill, NC)'s ground ball.
Seniors Dickens and Pierce as well as freshman Shortstop Luis Barrios (FR/Richmond, VA) led the Knights with multi-hit games all recording two hits apiece with Dickens the only RBI and extra-base hit. The double was Dickens' 8th of the season.
Also recording hits were junior LF Noah Whalen (JR/Buffalo, NY), freshman RF Bryce Dixon (FR/Hamlet, NC), and sophomore 1B Dean Pulley (SO/Rolesville, NC) while freshman 2B Noah Lawson (FR/Pfafftown, NC) reached base twice via walks. Barrios also walked as he reached base three times.
SAU falls to 15-13 overall while Chowan improves to 9-12-1. Chowan will make a trip to Laurinburg later this season on April 4 for a game as well.
SAU will now continue their road swing with a trip to play conference foe Bluefield College (Va.) on Friday and Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for a chilly 6:00 PM Friday evening with the DH to resume Saturday at Noon.
