M’s decline options on Iwakuma, Gallardo; activate Smyly, Phelps

With the World Series wrapping up yesterday, free agency officially kicked off today’ however, teams have exclusive access to negotiate with their impending free agents until 2:00p.m. PT on Monday, when they become eligible to be signed by any team.

As expected, the Mariners declined options on a pair of starting pitchers who fell short of expectations in 2017.

Per our own John Trupin, teams cannot keep players on the disabled list once the offseason is underway, and as such, the M’s activated two pitchers who appeared in a combined 10 games in their first year with the M’s.

  • Mariners activate RHP David Phelps from 60-day disabled list
  • Mariners activate LHP Drew Smyly from 60-day disabled list

And Jerry’s first acquisition since the 2017 MLB season officially wrapped up...
