[Women's Soccer] Lady Knights Shut Out Point for 1st win

0

LAURINBURG, N.C. - The St. Andrews University women's soccer team shut out Point University (Ga.) 1-0 at home on Sunday afternoon to grab their first victory of the season.

A quiet first half saw Point lead in shots 6-1, but SAU's one shot ended up sticking for the entire game with the Knights using it for the one goal win. A nice pass from senior midfielder Arianna Brown (SR/Freeport, Bahamas) to a streaking sophomore forward Roula Zafeiropoulou (SO/Pirgos, Greece) ended up being the game-winner as it came early on in the match in the 8th minute of action. The goal was Zafeiropoulou's first of the season and career while the assist was Brown's first this season as well.

Point outshot the Knights 13-3 overall with Zafeiropoulou leading in shots with two while freshman Tatiana Kendzulak (FR/Grandy, NC) also attempted one. Point tried to get the tying goal throughout the second half, but really had no quality chances as SAU's stellar defense stood tall.

Senior goalkeeper Rachel Widdicks (SR/Hull, England) made six saves on six shots on goal for her first shutout of the season. She now has 46 saves on the season to rank 5th in the AAC.

The Lady Knights defense, has now conceded just four total goals in the past four games combined.

St. Andrews improves to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the AAC while Point falls to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

St. Andrews will finally get back on the road to take on new conference foe Brenau University (Ga.) on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
