Van Uitert Storms To Pole In #32 United ORECA
Job van Uitert defended his provisional pole position with a storming last lap to secure pole in the #32 United Autosports Oreca – a 1:28.627 0.441 clear as a number of late chargers staged a last gasp bid for the final Pole Position of the season after the session was delayed by yet another loose drain cover out on track.
Second up was Will Stevens, van Uitert’s effort snatching pole back from the #31 Panis racing Oreca, and preventing Goodyear from claiming an ELMS pole position this year.
Five of the top six qualifiers improved on the final lap of the session with Nico Lapierre (#37 Cool Racing) snatching third slot from an earlier effort from IDEC Sport’s Paul Loup Chatin.
Phil Hanson was the other runner not to improve on the final lap but his penultimate effort was still quick enough to see off a final charge from Nyck de Vries in the #26 G-Drive Aurus 01
LMP3
It was an unusually underwhelming LMP3 qualifying session that saw a last minute duel between Wayne Boyd in the points leading #2 United Autosports Ligier JS P320 and the #4 DKR Duqueine of Laurents Hörr – Boyyd’s earlier effort would be good enough for his fourth pole of the season, 1:36.277, just over a tenth ahead of the DKR Duqueine, The United effort extending their Championship lead to 11 points ahead of tomorrow’s race.
Third fastest thanks to an early session effort was RLR MSport’s Malthe Jakobsen, the 17 year old unable to improve on his first flying effort, a further tenth back, a gap matched by Duncan Tappy who will share the second row with the young Dane – fourth fastest in the #3 United Ligier.
GTE
Speed and accuracy were the key for Andrea Piccini as he put the #60 Iron Lynx Ferrari onto pole position for tomorrow’s ELMS season finale at Portimao with a lap I 1:38.769. Behind there was disappointment for Richard Lietz who lost two quick laps to track limits violations that looked set to put the #93 Proton Porsche on the front row.
Piccini had to respond to a charge at the start of the session from ELMS debutant Alessio Rovera in the #88 AF Corse Ferrari, one of two FIA WEC GTE AM cars guesting here. Rovera’s effort though would give the numbered #88 a front-row slot with a 1:38.997. Third looked set to go to Alessio Picariello aboard the title-contending #77 Proton Porsche but a last gasp effort from Michele Getting saw the #83 complete an Iron Lynx 1-3, her 1:39 596 just two hundredths clear of the #77.
