Just as back-to school approaches for our families, it’s also a time for learning for us! Each year, Seattle Gymnastics Academy brings together our entire staff along with leading gymnastics experts from across the country for SGA University — our annual professional development weekend.

This special event is filled with learning, collaboration, and inspiration. Coaches dive into hands-on training, skill progressions, spotting techniques, and athlete development strategies, while also exploring important topics like child development, stress management, and leadership, and our Member Services Team attends seminars around organizational development, and customer service skills and strategies.

SGA University always takes place during the weekend of National Gymnastics Day — this year on September 20 — making it the perfect time to celebrate growth in both our athletes and our staff.

Featured Experts 2025

This year’s lineup of presenters includes a diverse group of specialists who bring fresh knowledge and perspectives to our team:

  • April Sawyer: Preschool & Recreational Gymnastics
  • Brandi Smith: Physical Therapy
  • Casey Chandler: Upper-Level Recreational Gymnastics
  • Terri DeVries: Trampoline & Tumbling
  • Elizabeth Boyer: Sports Psychology
  • Tom “Teacher Tom” Hobson: Early Childhood Education
  • Jeff Robinson: Boys Recreational Gymnastics
  • Phillip Tanzilo: Business Training Works (Organizational Development & Workplace Learning, Customer Service Skills & Strategies)

Why It Matters

At SGA, we believe great coaching creates great experiences. By bringing together experts and our dedicated staff, we ensure our coaches stay at the forefront of gymnastics instruction — prepared with the latest tools, techniques, and insights to help every child succeed.

SGA University is also about community. It’s a chance for our team to connect, share ideas, and grow together, strengthening the support network behind every class and program we offer.

What This Means for Families

For our families, events like SGA University mean that your child’s coaches are not just passionate about gymnastics — they’re continually learning, improving, and striving to provide the highest-quality experience possible. From preschoolers taking their first class to advanced athletes training for competition, every child benefits from the expertise and energy our coaches bring back from this event.

At SGA, we believe continuing education is essential in our pursuit of providing the highest quality instruction we can, and also for cultivating staff who are engaged in continual growth for themselves and their careers – wherever they go in life.
