Direction Finding: a Shadow as a Compass

0 115

Not just for skiing! A shadow can help you find your way

— even without a map, compass, or GPS. All you need is the sun.

Whether you’re still skiing this spring or hiking, climbing and out on an adventure this summer and autumn, knowing which direction you’re facing is key. This is especially true in the mountains, where slope aspect (the direction a slope faces) plays a big role in safety and enjoyment.

Watch this 3-minute video to see how you can use your shadow to figure out North, South, East, and West:

If you’re still in the snowy mountains, spring is a great time to use this technique. Choosing the right slope at the right time of day helps you avoid icy early mornings and heavy slush later on— and it’s an essential way to reduce your avalanche risk at this time of year. (see my article on wet snow avalanches here: henrysavalanchetalk.com/is-climate-change-making-off-piste-and-ski-touring-more-dangerous  ?).
