LAKELAND — When Johnnie Mack was running through defenses in the late ‘90s, ending his career by rushing for a team-high 97 yards in Lakeland’s 45-12 over Springfield Rutherford in the 1999 state championship game, becoming a college football coach was no where on his radar. “I never thought about coaching, never, not at all,” he said. “It was only playing football, trying to go as far as I can go into it.” Just over 26 years after that championship game in December of 1999, Mack was named running backs coach for Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes as he continues up the ranks in a coaching career that began nearly 13 years ago as a strength & conditioning intern at Southern Methodist.
