Reluctantly in limelight, Northome/Kelliher’s Kate Thayer makes history as state’s all-time steals leader

RED LAKE — Kate Thayer is not a person who wants the spotlight. But when a player of her caliber does something historic, she has no choice but to be in it. At the 7:15 mark in the first half against Red Lake, the senior on Northome/Kelliher’s girls high school basketball team picked up her 922nd career steal. She officially passed Mountain Iron’s Chelsea Mason as the most steals in Minnesota girls high school basketball history in the Mustangs’ 107-14 win.
