Those of us old enough to recall the 1961Major League baseball season remember it as the year of the asterisk. Babe Ruth hit a record 60 home runs with the Yankees in 1927, when a season lasted 154 games. Jimmy Fox of the Philadelphia Athletics hit 58 homers in 1932 and Hank Greenberg hit 58 for the Detroit Tigers in 1938, but no player after Ruth crossed the barrier to 60 home runs — until 1961. The Los Angeles Angels and new Washington Senators were added to the American League in 1961. To accommodate them, eight games were added to the schedule.
