Sturgeon were back in fishing news with a Winchester Adventures Facebook posting that on Oct. 24, Trish Johnson landed what should be a state catch-and-release record shovelnose sturgeon (37.75 inches) while fishing the Mississippi River below the Red Wing Lock-and-Dam. It’s another chapter in the story of the glorious comeback of that ancient fish and its much bigger cousin, the lake sturgeon. “She was pretty excited,” said Chris Winchester, who was Johnson’s guide that day. “We were looking for lake sturgeon, the big ones."
