Montoya set for Watkin Glen Cup Series NASCAR return

0 1

Seven-time Grand Prix winner Juan Pablo Montoya is set to don his famous helmet and overalls once again when he returns to the track next month onboard a NASCAR Cup car for the first time since 2014.

Montoya will join Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin’s 23XI team and take the green flag at the Cup Series’ event at Watkins Glen on September 15th at the wheel of the outfit’s #50 Toyota in support of Mobil 1’s 50 anniversary.

The car has already seen action this season, with Kamui Kobayashi and Corey Heim racing for 23 XI Racing as part of Mobil 1’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Montoya, a versatile driver who has conquered Formula 1, IndyCar, and IMSA, brings a wealth of experience to the 23 XI team.

The 48-year-old’s NASCAR career, which included 255 races run over nine years and two wins, was marked by undeniable talent and a fearless driving style.

The two-time Indianapolis 500 winner clinched the Cup Series victory at Watkins Glen in 2010, so it’s a track that clearly holds a special place in the Colombian driver’s heart.

“I’m looking forward to getting back in a Cup car and racing at Watkins Glen – a track I really enjoy and had the chance to experience earlier in my career,” commented Montoya.

“It’s an honor to celebrate the Mobil 1 team’s remarkable legacy in racing and be recognized for my contributions to motorsports.

“The Mobil 1 brand was one of my first sponsors when I started racing, so to represent the brand again as they celebrate this milestone will be so special,” added the 48-year-old.

“I’m also excited to work with 23XI and experience what the team is building.”

Montoya last competed in NASCAR’s premier series in 2014 with Team Penske.

“Juan Pablo Montoya is a world-class driver who has won in everything he’s driven, and he will be a great closer to the 50th-anniversary celebration we’ve had in NASCAR with the No. 50 Mobil 1 Toyota,” said Steve Lauletta, president of 23 XI Racing.

“The events have highlighted racing legends as well as what’s next in motorsports, and 23XI has been honored to have been a part of adding to the Mobil 1 legacy and celebrating such a momentous occasion.”
