Williams looking at ‘three options’ for 2025/26 driver line-up

0 1

With Alex Albon now locked in for the foreseeable future, Williams has shifted its focus to selecting the driver that will be paired with the Anglo-Thai racer for the next two seasons, with three options under consideration.

Williams team principal James Vowles said recently that he favors a stable line-up for the upcoming 2025/26 period as this will provide the Grove-based outfit with the best foundation to tackle the team’s transition to F1’s next-generation machines.

Despite the ongoing competition for the second seat, Vowles remains tight-lipped about the selection process.

He also acknowledged the importance of not overshadowing Alex Albon's recent commitment but confirms that a decision is nearing.

“I don't want to sully what I think is a really positive message that we have someone committing to the long-term future of Williams,” Vowles told the media at Imola on Thursday.

“I'm looking, at the moment, at about three options for 2025 and 2026. It’s as simple as that.

“When we're in a position where I can talk about it openly, which won't be long, we will do.”

Incumbent Logan Sargeant is believed to be one of Williams’ three options, even despite the American’s persistent struggles to consistently perform since joining Williams in 2023.

Vowles has made clear that Sargeant’s seat is still his to lose.

“For now, the direction of travel is we know that we need to be performing at the highest level,” he said.

“Logan has control in his hands in making sure he's performing at that level. That's his ability to control.

“I haven't taken that away from him. But what's clear is we also need to be talking to others, and we are.”

Reports have suggested that Mercedes protégé Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who currently competes in the FIA Formula 2 Championship with Prema, could be a viable option for Williams if Mercedes boss Toto Wolff rules that the young Italian is too young and inexperienced for the Brackley squad.

Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas and Alpine's Esteban Ocon have has also been mentioned as potential candidates for the team’s second seat.

Will Williams opt for experience, youthful talent, or a combination of both?

Only time will tell who will join Alex Albon in steering Williams into the future.
