Sports Briefs: Redwood girls lock up MCAL water polo playoff berth

Redwood High locked up the final MCAL girls water polo playoff berth with Tuesday’s 8-2 victory over Terra Linda. The two teams entered the week virtually tied for fourth place, each with two games left to play, but the head-to-head win gives the Giants (5-3 MCAL) the upper hand.

“The girls put together their strongest performance of the year and played great team defense,” Redwood head coach Brian Monty said.

Redwood junior Giselle Orson scored the trifecta, backed by two goals each from seniors Zoe Zedlitz and Sawyer Barta, and one from junior Annabelle Kilgore.

Emily Erickson and Jessa Dunn scored for the Trojans (4-4).

Marin Academy (8-0), Archie Williams (7-0) and Marin Catholic (6-1) fill out the MCAL tournament field.

Boys water polo

Tam High put up a tough challenge against defending NCS Division 1 champion San Ramon Valley in Danville on Tuesday before falling late, 12-9. Juniors Andrew Sternfels and Reed Hanna led the Red-tailed Hawks (16-5, 7-1 MCAL) with three goals each, while Sternfels added four assists. Goalie Felix Clarkson made 11 saves in a game that was tied, 9-9, in the final period. Tam closes out its MCAL regular season at Novato on Wednesday.

• Terra Linda powered to an 11-7 win over Redwood on Tuesday behind solid goaltending from Sam Frack and a big scoring day from Soren Jessen, who had four goals and two steals. The upset-minded Trojans are now tied with the Giants at 6-2 in league play as they battle for playoff position with the No. 3 and 4 seeds at stake. Both teams have one game left in the regular season.

Cam Hellar and David Finney had two goals and an assist each for the Trojans. Andrew Chong scored a goal and assisted on three others, while Jack Honsberger and Zach Krumbein each scored a goal. Jack Middleton finished with three assists and two steals for Terra Linda.

The Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period before Redwood closed the gap. Terra Linda turned back the surging Giants in the fourth period behind stalwart goaltender Frack, who had nine saves.

Field hockey

Samantha Haan scored three goals and assisted on two others as Redwood shut out Convent, 9-0, on Tuesday. Lucy Jeffers added two goals for the Giants, who also got scoring from Jane Broderick, Leyton Defeche, Natalie Poncet and Claire Johnson. Caitlin Titcombe, Georgia Bender and Broderick each had assists.

Girls tennis

Lina Stuart won in straight sets at the top of the singles order to help Tam defeat Marin Academy, 5-2, on Tuesday. The Red-tailed Hawks’ Annika Hakes pulled out a win at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 3-6, 11-9 in the super tiebreak.

• Maya Mosher picked up a straight-set win at No. 1 singles, but Marin Catholic fell to visiting University in a non-league contest Tuesday. Mosher won 6-3, 6-3 over Avery Fringer at the top of the singles order. The Wildcats’ Ellie Damiani put forth a strong showing at No. 4 singles in a 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 loss to the Devils’ Katherine Miao.

Flag football

Playoff-bound San Domenico wrapped up the regular season Tuesday with a 36-18 victory over Valley Christian, extending the Panthers’ winning streak to six games. San Domenico defeated Drew, 48-16, on Monday.

The Panthers’ defense frustrated Valley Christian, highlighted by Meyer Solomon’s 55-yard pick-six. San Domenico sophomore defensive end Colin Falconer was quick to get around the offensive line, hunting the Valley Christian passer.

San Domenico quarterback Drew Morehouse had an outstanding performance, connecting with Rio McLaughlin for two touchdown passes of more than 50 yards each.

Men’s soccer

College of Marin fell to Santa Rosa, 4-1, on Tuesday in Kentfield. The Mariners (9-6, 5-1) are scheduled to host Woodland on Friday.

Golf

Dominican University’s men’s squad finished 10th at the Otter Invitational to conclude the fall schedule Tuesday at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside. The Penguins finished at 44 over par, led by Sam Nielsen, who finished tied for 34th at 8 over.

• Indian Valley Golf Course is hosting the 10th annual Bobby Angel Tournament on Friday, Oct. 20. Pairs will compete in the Charlie Jackson-format event, with the holes split into best ball, scramble and Scotch ball play. The entry fee is $130 per player or $260 per team. Mountain biking

The Mountain Bike Hall of Fame will open its doors on Saturday, Oct. 21, to the Class of 2023, including Shaun Palmer, Diddie Schneider and Rob Warner.
