Sports briefs: Woodhead, Team USA win water polo opener

San Anselmo’s Dylan Woodhead and the US Men’s Water Polo team opened up group play with a 15-13 victory against the hosts on Sunday in Japan.

Woodhead played 2 minutes, 32 seconds in the contest but did not register a shot.

The U.S. trailed 8-7 at the half but held a 11-10 lead at the end of three quarters. Alex Bowen scored five times to lead the U.S., which plays its second game in Group A on Tuesday against South Africa.

  • Former Branson School standout Kate Courtney is set to compete in the women’s cross-country mountain biking race on Tuesday in Japan. The race begins at 11 p.m. PDT on Monday.

Lacrosse

Tam High standout Sam Smith was named the Most Valuable Player while scoring five goals as the North team defeated the South team, 12-11, at the Adrenaline All-American Games on Sunday at the Dallas Cowboys practice facility in Frisco, Tex.

Baseball

The San Rafael Pacifics were held without a run for the first seven innings of an eventual 7-3 loss against Martinez on Saturday night.

Martinez scored in five of the first six innings to build a 7-0 lead. The Pacifics (16-17) scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning then got one more in the ninth on Dalys Binder’s third home run of the season.

The Pacifics faced Wasco late Sunday night then have a few days off before playing Monterey at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Albert Park.
