West Seneca's Matt Anderson, US men's volleyball to play for bronze medal

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- West Seneca native Matt Anderson and the Team USA men's volleyball squad will play for a bronze medal after a heartbreaking five-set loss to Poland on Wednesday in the semifinals of the Paris Olympics.

The Poles took the match 25-23, 25-27, 14-25, 25-23, 15-13 after the United States looked on the verge of a gold medal game appearance when they led by two points late in the fourth set. However, Poland surged back with a 7-3 run to close the fourth and then held on in the fifth and final set to advance.

Anderson stood out in the loss, finishing with a tournament-high 24 kills to lead the Americans. The 36-year-old will now look to win his second career Olympic bronze medal, with the match scheduled for 10 a.m. EST Friday in Paris.

The U.S. will face the loser of the other semifinal between France and Italy.
