Sports Briefs: SD’s Amborn rallies for league tennis crown

San Domenico’s Carly Amborn showed the power in her game to capture the Bay Counties League singles crown at Golden Gate Park on Thursday. Amborn is the Panthers’ first BCL champion in the past 11 years, according to San Domenico head coach Robert Jessen.

The top-seeded Amborn had to fight back from a 5-1 deficit in the first set for a 7-6 (0), 6-4 win over No. 2 Kota Salinas of SF Waldorf.

Amborn advances to the North Coast Section Division II singles tournament, scheduled for Nov. 13-14 at Golden Gate Park.

Boys water polo

Terra Linda High overcame an opening round challenge to earn another shot at MCAL rival Archie Williams in the North Coast SectionNorth Coast Section Division I quarterfinals. The No. 8 Trojans (16-7) fought past No. 9 California, 13-10, at Las Lomas High in a first-round matchup. It was Terra Linda’s second win over the Grizzlies (7-16) this season.

“A lot closer than we thought, but a win is a win,” Terra Linda head coach Danny Roland stated. “(We’re) looking forward to our third game against Archie (Williams).”

The Trojans are scheduled to face the top-seeded Peregrine Falcons on Saturday at a neutral site. Archie Williams won two close matches against Terra Linda this season, a 13-10 regular-season win and a 9-8 MCAL semifinal victory.

Girls water polo

The Giants proved to be better than their seeding as No. 10 Redwood upended No. 7 Liberty, 10-6, at De La Salle High in Thursday’s first round of the NCS D-I playoffs. The Giants (12-15) advance to a quarterfinal matchup against No. 2 San Ramon Valley., which defeated Redwood, 12-2, on October 2.

Men’s water polo

Archie Williams High grad Quinn Woodhead scored twice and his brother, Dylan, added a goal as Team USA defeated host Chile, 28-2, in the quarterfinals at the Pan American Games. The Americans are scheduled to face Argentina in Friday’s semifinals.

Women’s basketball

A late push could not overcome a slow start as College of Marin dropped its season opener to a visiting Skyline team, 69-51, on Wednesday. Skyline built a 41-25 halftime lead, then stretched that to 23 points by the end of the third quarter.

Isobel Crosswhite led the Mariners (0-1) with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Gloria. Seidl. came off the. Marin bench to score 14 points and Samantha Morris added 11 points.

Men’s basketball

College of Marin opened the season with a 69-61 victory over Santa Rosa on Wednesday in Kentfield. Details were unavailable at press time.
