Sania Mirza To Call Time On Her Professional Tennis Career Next Month

New Delhi: Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza will finally bring an end to her professional tennis career next month after playing her last match in Dubai. She confirmed her retirement plans and said that next month’s WTA 1000 event in Dubai will be her last as a professional tennis player.

The 36-year-old is a former world No. 1 doubles player. She reached the pole position on April 13, 2015, and at present, she is ranked 24th in the world. In total she won six Grand Slam doubles titles.

In a recent interview with the WTA, the 36-year-old superstar, who helped popularise tennis in India, confirmed that she intends to retire at the end of the Dubai Tennis Championships, a WTA 1000 event that begins on February 19.

“I was going to stop right after the WTA Finals, because we were going to make the WTA Finals, but I tore my tendon in my elbow right before US Open so I had to pull out of everything,” Mirza told wtatennis.com.

“And honestly, the person that I am, I like to do things on my own terms. So, I don’t want to be forced out by injury. So, I’ve been training. The plan is to try and retire in Dubai during the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships,” she said.

Before the final showdown in Dubai Sania will travel to Australia to take part in the 2023 Australian Open, where she will pair up with Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina and compete in the women’s doubles event.
