[Women's Tennis] Hawks Upset Higher Seeded Westmont in GSAC Tourney Round 1

SURPRISE, Ariz. – After a tough regular season where injuries to key players factored into disappointing results, the San Diego Christian College women's tennis team was determined to prove that they have the spirit of a champion. On Tuesday in round one of the GSAC Championships, they did just that by upsetting the higher-seeded Westmont College Warriors 4-1.

The Warriors took the first doubles match from the Hawks 2-6, but SDCC partners Liza Hinrichs and Milana Hrudka evened things up right away with a 6-2 win of their own. Anthea Weiland and Angelika Sidorov sealed up the opening doubles team point winning their match in a tiebreak, 7-5.

Weiland would succumb to her Westmont opponent 3-6, 2-6 allowing the Warriors to erase the SDCC lead, but a San Diego Christian clean sweep in the remaining singles matches was on the horizon.

Liza Hinrichs completely dominated the Westmont number one, 6-2, 6-1, to put the Hawks back in charge of the match. Her quick work inspired her teammates and veteran Tomi Felix-Chavez responded by knocking another Warrior off 6-2, 6-2.

Now up 3-1, with great battles going on around the Surprise Tennis Center the momentum was in San Diego Christian's favor but WC was not out of it. That is until SDCC's Franzi Niederle, clinched the upset victory with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win.

The victory put the Hawks into Wednesday's round two where they will take on the OUAZ Spirit. The doubles competition begins at 9:00 am. Live scoring will be available at sdcchawks.com.
